Betty Schoenbaum,100, a visionary full of grace, generosity, compassion and boundless love passed away peacefully on July 31st, 2018. She was two months shy of her 101st birthday. Her family was by her side and she was laid to rest in Charleston, WV.
She is survived by: her four children; Joann Miller and Rick Miller of Oldsmar, FL, Jeff and Sue Schoenbaum of Palm Harbor, FL, Emily Schoenbaum of New Orleans, LA, Raymond and Susan Schoenbaum of Atlanta, GA; Seven grandchildren; Marc Schoenbaum, Adam Schoenbaum, Jay Schoenbaum, Brain Schoenbaum, Lauren Miller, Sara Miller, Lindsay Miller and ten great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother, Marvin Frank (95) of Sarasota and countless friends.
Born In Dayton Ohio in 1917, Betty Schoenbaum was a ballet and tap dancer and danced at the RKO on Broadway. She attended Ohio State University and modeled throughout college. Later, her and her late husband, Alex Schoenbaum moved to Huntington, WV and then Charleston WV where her husband, a pioneer in the restaurant industry, in 1947 founded the Shoney's restaurant chain. After raising her children and her husband passing, she continued his philanthropy, supporting numerous organizations and bettering the lives of thousands of people through scholarships, recreational facilities, human service centers, libraries, and life skill centers. She touched each and every recipient with love, wisdom and grace. The world has lost an angel but she will live on through us and through the legacy of all her good deeds.
A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Sholom on September 27th from 4pm to 6pm. All are invited.
